A photographer’s safari week. We start at the gate, not at breakfast. Iconic frames: leopard on granite at first light, elephants walking into a tank at 5pm, Udawalawe dust at 6:15am.

Built around light, not a species tick-list. Wilpattu villus, Minneriya’s gathering, two Yala dawns, Bundala birds, Udawalawe elephants — with the actual viewpoints and times.

Days

1. Day 1

   Into Wilpattu

   Transport

   CMB → Wilpattu (Eluwankulama / Hunuwilagama) · ~3 hrs

   Visit time

   Afternoon light on a villu ~2 hrs if we reach by 3:30pm

   Check in near the park. If the drive is clean we take a short evening jeep to learn the water — Wilpattu is lakes, not Yala scrub.

   • Wilpattu villus: sit still on the downwind bank. Reflections of forest and sky. 70–200mm. Don’t chase.

2. Day 2

   Wilpattu dawn — leopard and bear

   Transport

   Lodge → gate · ~15–25 min · depart 5:00am

   Visit time

   Safari ~6:00am–11:00am (first 90 min is the hour)

   Largest park in the country, fewest jeeps. Leopard on sandy tracks, sloth bear when palu fruit is on. We stay out through the first heat if a cat is moving.

   Photo notes

   • 5:30–8:00am on the red laterite tracks between villus. Look for pugmarks at culverts. 300–500mm. Window down, engine off at every water.
   • Sloth bear: fruiting palu trees 6:30–8:30am, often on the Hunuwilagama side.

3. Day 3

   The Gathering

   Transport

   Wilpattu → Habarana · ~3.5 hrs · park 25 min from the hotel

   Visit time

   Afternoon safari 2:30–6:30pm

   Minneriya Jul–Oct; Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park the rest of the year — we go where the herds are that week. Hundreds of elephants at a tank is the frame.

   Photo notes

   • Be on the tank 3:30pm. Herds walk in 4:30–6:15pm. Golden dust backlit after 5:15. 70–200mm for herds, 300mm for calves. Don’t use flash.
   • Iconic shot: line of elephants in water with storm light over the far shore — stay until the ranger calls it.

4. Day 4

   The long south run

   Transport

   Habarana → Tissamaharama / Palatupana · ~6–7 hrs with stops

   Visit time

   Travel day · evening scouting drive if we arrive by 3:30pm

   We break at a tank and a lunch town. Check in beside Yala. If light remains, a first Block 1 evening to learn Buthawa and Medha Para.

5. Day 5

   Yala Block 1 — leopard hour

   Transport

   Hotel → Palatupana gate · ~15 min · in line by 5:20am

   Visit time

   Dawn jeep ~5:30/6:00am–10:00am · rest · evening jeep 2:30–6:30pm

   Two drives. We book a tracker who will wait, not race. Yala has the highest leopard density on earth — still not a guarantee, still the right place.

   • Iconic: leopard on granite, Palatupana / Jamburagala rock, 6:20–7:40am. Rim light from the east. 400mm+.
   • Buthawa tank for reflections and mugger crocodile. Medha Para for cats on the road at first light — be first or third jeep, not the convoy.
   • Evening: waterholes 3:30–6:00. Elephant and peacock dust at 5:40pm on the open plains. Spot-meter the animal, not the sky.

6. Day 6

   Second Yala dawn, then Bundala birds

   Transport

   Yala → Bundala · ~45 min after the morning drive

   Visit time

   Yala 5:30–9:30am · Bundala 3:00–6:00pm (or 6:30am if we skip the second Yala)

   A second leopard window, then wetlands. Bundala is flamingos in season, painted storks, spoonbills, crocodiles — a different palette after Yala’s dry forest.

   • Bundala lagoons at 6:30am or 4:00pm. Flamingos (seasonal) at the salt pans. 300mm, low in the jeep. Watch the wind on the water.

7. Day 7

   Udawalawe elephants

   Transport

   Tissa → Udawalawe · ~1.5–2 hrs · depart ~4:30am for a 6:00am gate

   Visit time

   Morning jeep ~6:00–10:00am · Transit Home 9:30 feed ~30 min

   Open grassland, reservoir, almost certain elephants. The opposite of hunting a leopard in scrub — big skies, herds, dust.

   • Iconic: backlit herd in yellow grass, 6:15–7:00am, reservoir road. Walk-in calves at the water 7:30–8:30. 70–200mm. Don’t crop too tight — leave the sky.
   • Late morning: reservoir edge for bathing elephants and cormorant stacks.

8. Day 8

   Airport

   Transport

   Udawalawe → CMB · ~3.5–4 hrs

   Visit time

   Drive day — cards and batteries in the cabin bag

   Expressway north. We can dump cards to a drive in the vehicle if you want a backup before you fly.
