    Land and breathe

    No highway heroics on day one. Negombo lagoon sunset, sleep to your own clock.

  2. Day 2

    The first capital

    Sacred city ~3 hrs in the cooler afternoon

    Ruwanwelisaya, Sri Maha Bodhi, the moonstone. We use the car inside the site so you are not walking the whole ancient city in heat.

    Mihintale, then the rock country

    The stairs where Buddhism took root on the island. Afternoon by a Habarana tank.

  4. Day 4

    Sigiriya and Dambulla

    Sigiriya ~2.5–3 hrs at opening · Dambulla ~1 hr after lunch

    Lion Rock early. Cave temples when the coaches thin out.

  5. Day 5

    Polonnaruwa and The Gathering

    Habarana → Polonnaruwa · ~1 hr · park gate ~25 min from town

    Ancient city ~2.5 hrs · afternoon safari ~3.5 hrs (2:30–6:30pm)

    Bicycles in Polonnaruwa. Then Minneriya or Kaudulla depending on where the elephants are (Jul–Oct is The Gathering; other months we follow the herds).

    • Minneriya: be on the tank bund 3:30–6:15pm. Elephants walk in from the forest as the heat drops. 70–200mm is enough; dust backlit after 5:15.
  6. Day 6

    Kandy

  7. Day 7

    Gardens into tea

    Royal Botanical Gardens, then the climb to 1,800m. Cool night.

  8. Day 8

    Horton Plains

    World’s End loop ~3–4 hrs

    Gate at 6:00. Cloud often kills the view after 9:00. Tea factory on the way back.

    Train to Ella

    Yala

    Afternoon safari ~3.5–4 hrs (2:30–6:30pm)

    Check in, then the first jeep. Leopard country — we brief the tracker on photo pace, not a tick-list.

  12. Day 12

    Dawn in Block 1, then the coast

    The better leopard window is the first ninety minutes. Then south to the beach.

  13. Day 13

    Sea and fort

    Optional whales at 6:30am. Fort walls in the late afternoon when the cruise groups have gone.
